HUGO CHAVEZ elected President of Venezuela in 1998, is a colourful
unpredictable folk hero beloved by his nation's working class and a
tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see
him deposed.
Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April
11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present
48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides.
Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état.
It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary
portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela
Washington's biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."
President Hugo Chavez's platform called for a wholesale rejection of
globalization and what he called the "savage project of neo-liberalism",
embraced by President Carlos Andres Perez. President Chavez replaced the
neocon agenda with a radical nationalism that appealed to the country's
impoverished majority.
So it shouldn't have come as much of a surprise that a coup was engineered
by supporters of past president Carlos Andres Perez. Unlike other coups,
this one was caught on camera!
Intelligent observers from around the world are suggesting that Venezuela
has the best example of a democratic society of anywhere in the world
today! However this is not the news you will hear from CNN or other media
sources, about what is happening in this oil rich country.
The film is an amazing example of the misuse of power and who pulls the
strings in the game of global chess, and how the game is played.
